Christmas Eve, 2001. While Spain prepares to welcome the euro and the echo of the September 11 attacks resounds in the news, a family gathers for their annual Christmas dinner. Beneath the aroma of the meal and the sound of the King’s speech, four people try to maintain a façade of normality that threatens to crumble with every toast. Graciela, the mother, tries to control every last detail of the evening, hiding behind her strong Argentine character the frustration of a life of sacrifice and a piece of news that is burning inside her. At her side, her two daughters navigate their own abysses: Lena, the eldest, takes refuge in an icy silence as she faces her immediate future; Silvia, the youngest, struggles with the panic brought on by unexpected news. Tony, Lena’s husband, is a man of order who hides an unforgivable moral betrayal behind his uniform. While the outside world seems to be falling apart in the newspaper headlines, this family must confront its own internal destruction, discovering that the truth can be a far more dangerous territory than any global conflict.
