José Hernández Afonso presents the exhibition “Corpus Aureum” at Espacio Cultural La Mutua The exhibition brings together paintings, prints, sculptures and geometric compositions that reflect decades of artistic research around abstraction and visual perception. Next August 7, the exhibition “Corpus Aureum” by the artist from Arucas José H. Afonso will open its doors at the Espacio Cultural La Mutua, which is part of the Department of Culture, Democratic Memory and Historical Heritage. This is a show in which, in the artist’s own words, “...the fascination with Geometric Abstraction has never stopped probing my creative process. It was perhaps the first consolidated working style that I am aware of in my artistic career.” The result of this prolonged process of creative exploration is expressed in impossible figures, visual perception effects, typefaces, imagotypes, tessellations, models, small sculptures and countless graphic-mathematical games that allow us to understand how objects are constructed. Although later other techniques took a leading role in his career, the artist has continued to develop and expand, over time, new compositions that make up this complex Corpus Aureum. José H. Afonso is a visual artist and worked for 30 years as a teacher of Fine Arts and Design. He has an outstanding international career, with public and graphic works recognized in different countries, and is considered a specialist in conceptual art, the golden ratio and intaglio printmaking. In this exhibition, Geometric Abstraction, Expressionist Abstraction, Calligraphic Abstraction and Intaglio Printmaking coexist with the aim of offering an interpretation of the visual universe. As the Councillor for Culture, Carlos González Matos, points out, “...these paintings, with an almost sculptural dimension, create infinite depths or abysses thanks to geometric combinations, light and shadow, modifying our perspective of reality.” The exhibition can be visited until August 28, from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
