Conductor Shiyeon Sung makes her debut in the season of the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra with a program that establishes a dialogue between tradition and the avant-garde across the 20th and 21st centuries. Clarinetist Dácil Guerra Guzmán performs the Concerto for Clarinet and Ensemble by Beat Furrer, composed in 2020 and one of his most important concertante works of recent years. For her part, the OFGC’s principal harpist, Catrin Mair Williams, takes on Rautavaara’s Harp Concerto (2000), a score that is highly representative of his late style, built on an evocative sound fabric with a neo-Romantic character. The program is rounded out by two works with a strong rhythmic and colorful imprint: the Concert Românesc (Romanian Concerto), where Ligeti fuses elements of traditional folklore with an avant-garde language, and the suite from The Miraculous Mandarin by Béla Bartók, which closes the evening with one of his major contributions to the orchestral repertoire, marked by a frenetic succession of rhythms and atmospheres of great intensity.
