Exótica: A Comedy Monologue by Jara
Details
Panamanian. Dyke. Publicist. Migrant. Gen Z. And now also: certified exotic creature, because in Panama she’s just one more in the crowd, but in the Canary Islands people look at her as if they’d seen a platypus walking along Las Canteras. This show brings together 3 years of work between Panama and Spain. In it, Giselle tells how her school turned her into a dyke, her traumas with her mom asking her for a grandchild, the Uber drivers who don’t know if she’s a man, a woman or a thing, and the different women who have crossed her path in life. She also talks about the most painful immigration process of her existence, Spanish bureaucracy (worse than any ex). It’s about identity, about feeling like you’re in your thirties, and about an excess of therapy that still doesn’t seem to be working. But even so, it’s still exotic. Get ready to laugh, cry, or both at the same time. If you’re part of the LGBT community, a migrant, or simply a disadvantaged minority like her, you’re the VIP audience tonight. And if you’re none of that but you still need therapy, don’t worry: there’s room for you too.
