Confessions of the Soul brings together three ways of looking at the world through music, becoming a journey through the visible and invisible landscapes that inhabit our memory. The universe of Maurice Ravel’s tales, the free and surprising imagination of Ernesto Mateo, and the introspective poetics of Jean Sibelius build an itinerary that moves from play to contemplation, from fantasy to deep emotion. Symphonics in Miniature · Confessions of the Soul proposes a journey through three profoundly different musical universes, performed by an orchestral ensemble that seeks closeness, transparency, and detail, without renouncing the expressive dimension of the great symphonic repertoire. Under the direction of Isabel Costes, the Ensemble of the Orquesta Sinfónica del Atlántico – ODA presents a programme that brings together Ernesto Mateo, Maurice Ravel, and Jean Sibelius: three languages, three eras, and three ways of transforming into music that which belongs to the realm of imagination, memory, and emotion. The journey begins with the Toy Piano and Orchestra Concerto by Ernesto Mateo, a work that takes as its starting point an instrument associated with childhood in order to discover within it an unexpected sound world. Play, curiosity, and experimentation open the door to a different kind of listening, where what seems small can acquire an extraordinary expressive power. That connection with childhood and imagination finds a new dimension in Ma mère l’oye by Maurice Ravel. Inspired by the world of fairy tales, his music leads us into a territory of extraordinary delicacy, populated by evocations, characters, and landscapes that seem to emerge from a distant memory. Ravel turns the orchestra into a space of colours and transparencies where fantasy and emotion merge. After the intermission, Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 leads the programme towards another landscape. Intimacy expands, the music acquires a broader breath, and what began linked to play and evocation culminates in a work of enormous emotional strength. In Sibelius, nature, memory, and the inner world seem to advance together until they reach the powerful affirmation of its final pages. It is precisely in this transition that Symphonics in Miniature acquires its full meaning. The project proposes approaching the orchestral repertoire from another perspective: a more intimate and transparent dimension in which every line, every gesture, and every instrumental voice acquires a particularly perceptible presence. It is not about diminishing the music, but about approaching its architecture from within, preserving its depth and its capacity to move us. In Confessions of the Soul, the Ensemble of the Orquesta Sinfónica del Atlántico and its conductor, Isabel Costes, thus trace an arc that runs from the miniature to the large form, from play to contemplation, from fantasy to deep emotion. Three composers and three worlds that end up meeting in the same place: that invisible space in which music ceases to describe and begins to confess itself.
