New Release of Shearwaters Scheduled on the Coast of Arucas for November 1 As has been done for more than twenty years, on Sunday, November 1, 2026, volunteers, members and supporters of the groups Amigos de las Pardelas, La Vinca Ecologistas en Acción and ASCAN will meet to go to the area of Las Salinas del Bufadero (Bañaderos - Arucas) to carry out a release of shearwaters, an activity included in the 2026 Popular Campaign for the Protection of the Cory’s Shearwater. The birds that will be released will have been found and rescued during the previous night along the entire north coast of the island, from Arucas to Agaete, after accidentally crashing to the ground when dazzled, among other things, by the public lighting of streets and roads, sports facilities, ports… During the activity, members of the organizing groups will share with those attending some details about the life of the Cory’s Shearwater, and they will experience returning freedom to birds that are seriously affected by the unsustainable development of many coastal areas of our islands. The meeting point will be at the Edificio de Usos Múltiples de Bañaderos (C/ Océano Glaciar Antártico, nº 2) at 11:00 a.m., or directly at the release point, at around 11:15 a.m. From Amigos de las Pardelas, La Vinca Ecologistas en Acción and ASCAN, “a call is made to all the citizens of Gran Canaria so that, if over the coming weeks they find any injured or grounded individual of this species, they contact the phone number 928 353 443 (CECOPIN - Cabildo de Gran Canaria), or call 112 and, together, we will help them return to the sea so that they can continue their life cycle.”
