The Church of Santa Brígida will host this Saturday, October 3 at 8:30 p.m., the concert by Ensemble Vocale Cantica Nova, one of the most renowned polyphonic choral ensembles from Sicily, based in Milazzo. The performance is part of the 9th International Choral Music Festival of the Canary Islands, which is taking place until November 28 in different venues across the islands. Admission will be free. The concert will be conducted by Francesco Messina, who leads an ensemble that has built a repertoire spanning different periods and styles, from Renaissance polyphony and classical sacred music to contemporary compositions, arrangements of traditional Sicilian music, and works of a spiritual and gospel character. Over more than thirty years of activity, Ensemble Vocale Cantica Nova has taken part in national and international choral festivals and competitions, where it has received various awards for the timbral quality and expressiveness of its performances. Among its main prizes are those obtained in Caccamo (2004), Malgrat de Mar (2006) and Lodi (2007); the second prize and the award for best Renaissance performance in Ohrid (2010); a bronze medal in Vilnius (2018); and three medals in Bratislava (2023): two gold, in the categories of pop/jazz/gospel and a cappella folk song, and one silver in the chamber choir category. The Italian ensemble also maintains an intense concert activity in Italy, performing in churches, auditoriums and historic venues, and regularly tours Europe to bring works by contemporary composers closer to audiences. Its history is closely linked to the promotion of choral music, and since 2009 it has organized the InCanto Mediterraneo International Choral Festival in Milazzo, which has become a meeting point for ensembles from various countries. The concert is part of the program designed by the Department of Culture, headed by Avelina Fernández Manrique de Lara, for this month of October.
