Three Voices of the 20th Century – Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria
Details
Three Voices of the 20th Century brings together, under the direction of Leonard Slatkin, three very different perspectives on the music of the last century. Together with violinist Cho-Liang Lin, the programme includes Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, El Corpus Christi en Sevilla by Albéniz in Arbós’s orchestration, and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2, one of the great peaks of post-Romantic symphonism. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Leonard Slatkin returns to the podium of the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra with a programme that brings together three very different ways of understanding the music of the 20th century. Violinist Cho-Liang Lin takes centre stage in Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, a work of great formal beauty and marked lyricism that culminates in a finale of great virtuoso demands. Before that, El Corpus Christi en Sevilla by Albéniz will be performed, in the orchestration by Enrique Fernández Arbós. The evening closes with Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2, a work rooted in the post-Romantic tradition that continues to stand out for the breadth of its melodies and its intense emotional charge.
