La tabernera del puerto – XXXIV Canary Islands Zarzuela Season
Details
La tabernera del puerto is a zarzuela, a seafaring romance in three acts written by Federico Romero and Guillermo Fernández-Shaw, with music by Pablo Sorozábal. It premiered at the Teatro de la Zarzuela on March 23, 1940. La tabernera del puerto portrays a story of sailors in an imaginary village on the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, where smugglers, drunkards, sardine sellers, and a love story all come together. The protagonist is Marola, a strong and independent woman who runs a tavern and attracts the interest of several men, which generates conflicts and tensions. Throughout the work, themes such as love, jealousy, betrayal, and the struggle for personal freedom unfold. One of the most important characters is Leandro, a sailor who falls in love with Marola, giving rise to a complicated relationship marked by secrets and suspicions. Musically, the zarzuela stands out for its mixture of dramatic moments and more lyrical ones, with very expressive melodies that help convey the characters’ emotions. Among its best-known pieces is the romanza "No puede ser" (It cannot be), which has become very popular within the Spanish lyric repertoire. Overall, La tabernera del puerto is a highly representative work of the zarzuela genre because it combines an engaging story with moving music, reflecting life in a port environment and the intense feelings of its characters.
