'Life is a Dream', the celebrated philosophical drama by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, gives life to the 10th edition of the show by Memvus Arte and the Auditorio y Teatro Foundation of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: 'Volcánica'. A choral, immersive proposal that updates this universal classic and explores, from a contemporary perspective, the conflict between fate and free will embodied by Segismundo. The 10th edition of 'Volcánica', the show co-produced by Memvus Arte and the Auditorio y Teatro Foundation of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, takes as its inspiration 'Life is a Dream', the renowned philosophical drama by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, one of the most distinguished playwrights of the Spanish Golden Age. More than 140 artists bring this proposal to life which, through a total stage language where singing, dance, percussion and instrumentation converge, builds an immersive experience that brings this universal classic into the present. At the center stands the figure of Segismundo, whose tragic story embodies the conflict between destiny and free will. His voice, amplified and made collective, unfolds through the entire company, which takes on the development of the drama in a choral way. The artistic proposal, conceived by Yanira Sánchez, redraws 'Life is a Dream' from a contemporary viewpoint, transforming Calderón's verses into a stage creation where music and movement expand and amplify the power of the story. The sound universe, created by Vicente Umpiérrez, structures the show through original choral compositions that set Calderón's verses to music, together with pieces that integrate vocal, orchestral and tribal-rooted timbres, sustaining the dramatic weight of the scenes and reinforcing their expressive intensity.
