In the 2012 edition of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival, the “The Moderns” series was programmed. It was an exploration of avant‑garde cinematographic art prior to the introduction of sound, conceived by our colleague Francisco Ponce. We now propose to complete that landmark with nine films made between 1929 and 1934, selected by Luis Miranda, the festival’s director. A WOMAN OF THE LAW (Hijôsen no onna) Japan, 1933, 89´ DIRECTOR: Yasujiro Ozu SCREENPLAY: Tadao Ikeda PRODUCTION: Shochiku CINEMATOGRAPHY: Hideo Shigehara (B&W) EDITING: Kazuo Ishikawa, Minoru Kuribayashi MUSIC: Ebenezer Eferobor CAST: Kinuyo Tanaka SYNOPSIS: Set in Yokohama, a port city where crime and prostitution rule the streets, it portrays the turbulent relationship between a gangster and his girlfriend Tokiko, who works by day as a typist in an office. Her rival works in a record shop and is deeply worried because her younger brother is beginning to slide down the slope of crime. In collaboration with Fundación DISA
