Pure agriculture: Madrelagua once again awards the best potato in Gran Canaria • The traditional Potato Contest will be held next Saturday, August 1, as part of the Fiestas de Los Paperos, consolidating itself as one of the most representative events to recognize agricultural work and highlight one of the island’s most emblematic agricultural products. The contest will begin at 7:00 p.m. with the closing of the reception of the specimens and the start of the official weighing. From that moment on, the potatoes entered will be evaluated in the categories of individual potato and batch of ten potatoes, with any that arrive after the weighing has started being left out of the contest. Last year’s edition once again demonstrated the extraordinary quality of Madrelagua’s agricultural production. In the individual potato category, the first prize went to Ramón Perdomo, with a specimen weighing 1,450 grams; the second prize went to Sergio Tadeo, with 1,045 grams, while Luis Rodríguez took third place with a potato weighing 1,035 grams. In the batch of ten potatoes category, Ramón Perdomo also won first prize thanks to a batch that reached a weight of 9,300 grams, a sign of the productive potential of the neighbourhood’s land. The prizes will once again recognize the effort of the participants. In the batch of ten potatoes category, the winner will receive 40 euros and a Fierro cider, while the second and third prizes will be endowed with 20 and 15 euros, respectively. In the individual potato category, the first prize will also consist of 40 euros and a Fierro cider, with 20 and 15 euros going to the second and third place, completing the prize list.
