Turandot – 59th Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Opera Season
Details
Turandot is an opera in three acts (left unfinished at Puccini's death and completed by Franco Alfano), set in a mythical China. Princess Turandot, cold and implacable, has sworn not to marry unless her suitor solves three riddles; if he fails, he will be executed. Many have died in the attempt. An unknown prince, Calaf, accepts the challenge and solves all three riddles. Turandot, disconcerted, does not want to keep her promise. Then Calaf, to give her a way out, proposes a new challenge: if she discovers his name before dawn, he will renounce marrying her and accept death. Turandot tries to find it out, even torturing the faithful slave Liù, who is in love with Calaf and commits suicide to protect his secret. In the end, Turandot surrenders to love and declares that she knows the prince's name: "Love". The opera concludes with a celebration of Turandot's redemption through love. * Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
