Memories of Tamarán: The Volcano’s Memory
Details
LÓperArs presents “Memories of Tamarán”, a scenic trilogy about the identity of Gran Canaria that begins its journey in Arucas. The cultural project LÓperArs presents “Memories of Tamarán”, an interdisciplinary proposal in the form of a scenic trilogy created and directed by Mario Méndez, which explores the identity of Gran Canaria through music, dance, theatre, contemporary creation and the island’s historical heritage. The first installment, “The Memory of the Volcano”, will premiere on June 12 and 14 at Casa Gourié–Municipal Museum of Arucas, with two performances each day at 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The project was born as an evolution of “A Journey Through the History of Gran Canaria”, consolidating an artistic line that connects the territory with the live arts. The trilogy is made up of three independent yet interconnected experiences: “The Memory of the Volcano”, “Echoes of the Kings” and “The Broken Island”. The piece offers a contemporary perspective on the island’s heritage, blending the universal lyrical repertoire with local art. “Memories of Tamarán” is conceived as a sensory and emotional experience that invites reflection on the present of the island and its future projection. Artistic direction and creation are by Mario Méndez, while musical direction and piano are led by Nauzet Mederos. The project presentation took place in the gardens of Casa Gourié–Municipal Museum of Arucas, with the presence of the mayor, Juan Jesús Facundo Suárez; the councillor for Culture, Historical Heritage and Democratic Memory, Cláudio Forett; and the artistic director, Mario Méndez. This philosophy runs throughout the trilogy, where the natural and historical heritage of Gran Canaria becomes the central axis. Volcanoes, forests, ocean, trade winds and historic spaces shape the narrative of collective identity proposed by the work. In “The Memory of the Volcano”, the Municipal Museum itself and its surroundings are integrated as an active part of the scenic narrative. #arucascultura
