Details

Domingo López Torres will be the central figure of the Canary Islands Literature Day in 2027. This was approved today by the Council of the Government of the Canary Islands, at the proposal of the Ministry of Culture. A native of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Domingo López Torres (1907-1937) was an outstanding poet and essayist, as well as a key figure in surrealism and the literary avant-garde in the Canary Islands. His career was closely linked to the legendary magazine Gaceta de Arte, through which he stood out for his ability to intertwine literary creation with a deep political commitment. Among his most notable works are “Diario de un sol de verano” (1929) and the illustrated poetry collection “Lo imprevisto” (1936), which has special significance because he created it while he was imprisoned in Fyffes due to his political convictions, precisely when the Civil War broke out. His life was tragically cut short in 1937 when, as a victim of repression, he was thrown into the sea. Canary Islands Literature Day 2027 will be held on 21 February, although throughout the coming year López Torres will be the focus of numerous initiatives by the Government of the Canary Islands, which also invites all institutions and the public to become acquainted with his life and work through activities and the reading of his texts.
